A Personal Reflection on Upskilling, Reskilling, and the Soul of Modern Higher Education
There was a time when the boundaries of a classroom were clearly defined by four walls, a chalkboard, and the pages of a prescribed syllabus. For decades, the higher education ecosystem operated on a straightforward premise: the professor was the primary gatekeeper of knowledge, and the student was the consumer. We walked into lecture halls, delivered structured content, and assessed students on their ability to retain and reproduce that information.
Today, that model is entirely obsolete.
We are living through a massive paradigm shift driven by hyper-connectivity, rapid institutional restructuring, and the sudden ubiquity of advanced artificial intelligence. When students can query a generative AI tool and receive a highly structured, comprehensive breakdown of complex management theories in seconds, the traditional role of the educator must change. We are no longer required to be information providers; we are being called to be architects of learning environments. To guide our institutions, faculty teams, and students through this digital transformation, we must first look inward. Staying relevant in this new era requires a profound commitment to personal and professional growth, driven by two distinct yet interconnected pathways: upskilling and reskilling.
Upskilling: Elevating the Craft and Providing Critical Context
Upskilling is not about changing what you do; it is about elevating your core domain expertise to meet global standards. In the context of modern academia, this means recognizing that students do not need us to define terms—they need us to provide deep, systemic context. It is our responsibility to teach them how to filter high-quality data from overwhelming digital noise and build robust critical thinking skills.
For me, upskilling has meant looking at foundational business, commerce, and management curricula through a contemporary lens. It is no longer sufficient to teach organizational strategy in a vacuum. We must seamlessly weave global realities, such as Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) frameworks and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), into the very fabric of our coursework. Upskilling also demands that we elevate our research methodologies, pushing ourselves to publish in top-tier, internationally recognized journals. By doing so, we ensure that the insights we bring back to our lecture halls and institutional boardrooms are cutting-edge, competitive, and highly relevant to the challenges of the modern world. It transforms us into true masters of our craft, deepening our authority as researchers and academic leaders.
Reskilling: Embracing the Discomfort of the New
While upskilling deepens our existing foundations, reskilling requires a distinct level of professional humility. Reskilling is the conscious decision to step entirely out of our comfort zones and master capabilities that did not exist when we began our careers. It means acknowledging that some of the tools, instructional pedagogies, and administrative methods that served us exceptionally well for decades are simply no longer sufficient to support a smart campus or a future-ready student body.
When technologies like Robotic Process Automation (RPA) and AI began disrupting business workflows and administrative frameworks, academia faced a choice: resist the tide or master the tools. Reskilling is choosing the latter. It involves learning how to design dynamic, matrixed assessments that technology cannot easily replicate—shifting our focus toward oral defenses, real-world case study synthesis, and collaborative project management. On an administrative and governance level, reskilling allows us to understand data-driven dashboards and automate routine workflows. By embracing this technological fluency, we break down our own mental silos and free up critical cognitive bandwidth, allowing us to focus on high-value institutional strategy and impactful research.
The Human Element: The Irreplaceable Soul of an Educator
Amidst the constant discussions surrounding technological adoption, data governance, and accreditation frameworks, my most profound takeaway remains unchanged: technology can never replicate the soul of an educator.
Algorithms are incredibly efficient at delivering content, optimizing schedules, and analyzing metrics, but they cannot mentor a young researcher through a period of intense self-doubt. An AI tool cannot instill deep professional ethics, model empathetic leadership, or provide the steady emotional anchor that students and junior faculty members need during major life and career transitions. True learning is a human-centric endeavor. It thrives in an environment of mutual respect, curiosity, and psychological safety—elements that can only be cultivated by a dedicated mentor.
Ultimately, our grandest role in higher education is to model adaptability. When our peers, faculty members, and students observe us actively upskilling our traditional domains and reskilling our technological capabilities, they learn something far more valuable than the subject matter itself: they learn how to survive, thrive, and lead in an ever-changing world. We cannot break the rigid silos within our institutions if we do not first break the silos within our own minds. Choosing the path of continuous personal growth is not merely a professional obligation; it is our lasting commitment to shaping the next generation of leaders.
